Band history:

Colin Shay, Tony Wiesman, Cameron Davis, and Adam Robinson have been making noise in basements and garages for years. The first experiment, the Two Hats, which stayed in Cameron’s basement never to see the light of day (aren’t you lucky?) consisted of the three core members Tony, Cameron, and Adam. Then, after the demise of the Two Hats, Adam continued to play with numerous electric devices and movie equipment on his own, and a year or so later Tony played bass for The Random Tangents. Later, a band with the three core members of Colin Shay, Tony, and Cameron called the Garage Cats appeared. After this group disbanded there was the Fashions which consisted (mostly) of Adam and Tony making folk-y ballads in Adam’s basement after school. Adam was asked to sing four Smiths’ covers for the Tangents in late spring. He was deeply honored. Colin continued to play with several other bands.

Summer came along and it was a hot one. A group consisting of Colin, Tony, and Cameron began to make rock songs. After asking Adam to join by contributing vocals, the line-up, for the most part, was complete...for then.

Cameron, after 2 shows with the band, found his marching band was taking up his time, and left the group. With his dismissal the group found themselves looking to Michael Hendricks for their beat. His addition was then followed by a series of bass players finally ending with Aaron on bass.

Behind the name:

We were a band long before we had a name. We made lists and lists of names including: Up U But, Thank You Steak, LOL OMG, and Sad Panda. Then, one Saturday evening, we locked ourselves in a room and didn’t come out until we had a name. After flipping through a copy of Catcher in the Rye, Adam came across this little passage:

“In case you don’t live in New York, the Wicker Bar is in this sort of swanky hotel, the Seton Hotel. I used to go there quite a lot, but I don’t any more. I gradually cut it out. It’s one of those places that are supposed to be very sophisticated and all, and the phonies are coming in the window. They used to have these two French babes, Tina and Janine, come out and play the piano and sing about three times every night. One of them played the piano-strictly lousy-and the other sang, and most of the songs were either pretty dirty or in French. The one that sang, old Janine, was always whispering into the goddamn microphone before she sang…Then, when she was all done whispering and being cute as hell, she’d sing some dopey song, half in English and half in French, and drive all the phonies in the place mad with joy.”

We weren’t really sure how to pronounce “Seton” so we googled around and found the real Seton Hotel. Colin called the phone number and a voice said:

”Hi, Seet’n Hotel”
”Oh uhh..wrong number.”
And Colin hung up the phone. Our question had been answered without us even asking.

We were all set. We became Seton Hotel.

Hopefully, no legal action will ensue.
